MORE QUOTES FROM TANYA

Throughout her career, outspoken Tanya has never shied away from the tough questions. Here are some classic Tucker quotes:

On her longevity as a performer:  "They call me Tanya Timex. Takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin'. If everything gets to you, you probably won't last too long in this business. I'm not going to take it lying down. If someone's going to run over me with a truck, they're going to do it while I'm standing." (Fresno Bee, Dec. 6, 2002)

On her childhood in Willcox, Ariz., birthplace of singing cowboy Rex Allen, and how it influenced her music: "The history of this area is rich and filled with amazing tales that are told and retold by locals. I think my love of the storytelling tradition in song and all things Western is rooted right there in Sulphur Springs Valley." (Tucker’s 1997 autobiography, Nickel Dreams)

On her early musical influences: "The whole family listened to music on the radio. We loved Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lynn, Wanda Jackson, Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Hank Williams ... and Frank Sinatra. I always loved him." (Nickel Dreams)

On her alto voice: "Once I understood what my voice would and would not do, singing was as easy as shooting fish in a barrel." (Nickel Dreams)

On her efforts to break into country music as a pre-adolescent: "My dad asked Roy Acuff, 'What would you do if you had a 9-year-old kid that wants to get started in the business?'  He looked at me, shook my hand, and said, 'Darling, go back home, go to school, get married and bring your kids to see me sometime.' You know that would have been great advice for most people, but it wasn't good advice for me." (Dallas Morning News, Oct. 3, 2002)

On country immortal Ernest Tubb, who met 12-year-old Tanya and was so impressed by her that he invited her to sing a duet of "Sweet Thang," his hit with Loretta Lynn: "Getting on stage with people like Ernest Tubb made me more determined to be a professional singer." (Nickel Dreams)

On her first producer, Billy Sherrill, who heard Bette Midler sing "Delta Dawn" and decided that 14-year-old Tanya could make it into a hit: "I'll go to my grave thanking whatever angel got Billy to tune into the Johnny Carson show that night." (Nickel Dreams)

On her 1974 hit, "Would You Lay With Me (On a Field of Stone)," which was banned by some country radio stations because the title sounded too suggestive: "Some preachers were using the song as an example of how country music was getting as evil as rock 'n' roll." (Nickel Dreams)

On her youthful attraction to rock 'n' roll: "What I especially liked about rock concerts was the audience. They were young and energetic … I was beginning to wonder how I could expand my live show and get that same response from a country crowd."(Nickel Dreams)

On her hard-partying lifestyle and drug use in the 1980s, which made her a regular subject of supermarket tabloid headlines: "People love to read about people like me. They don't like to read about people who never do anything wrong, never say anything wrong, have never been to a wild party. People like me sell magazines. The (National) Enquirer makes a fortune off people like me." (Los Angeles Times, Nov. 28, 1989)

On having three children out of wedlock: "I had to do the things that were right for me. They might not be right for someone else, but I felt like I had to make the decision that I think that I could live with. I wouldn't do anything any different. I would make the same decisions today that I made then." (Dallas Morning News, Oct. 3, 2002)

On the night in Nashville in 1997 when, in the course of an evening with Dateline NBC co-anchor Stone Phillips, she lifted her sweater and flashed a roomful of music-industry people: "A Tanya moment. Sorry ya missed it." (People Weekly, April 7, 1997)

On her adult struggles with panic attacks and depression: "The more people told me that, you know, wow, you should be so blessed. Don't you feel blessed? You have all this — a mansion and all these beautiful things. The more they told me that, the more depressed I got. At one point I didn't get out of bed for three months, and I went down to the bottom of the hill one day and I had to call somebody to get me because I couldn't physically walk up the hill." (Larry King Live, April 30, 2005)

On Helen Reddy’s version of "Delta Dawn," recorded after Tanya had a country top 10 hit with the song: "I think mine was better." (Associated Press, June 12, 1987)

On her pal, rising country star Gretchen Wilson, sings in her hit song, "Redneck Woman", that she "knows the words to every Tanya Tucker song":  "Hey, she's lying out her ass. I asked her to sing me one of my songs the other day, and she didn't know a damn word of it!" (Entertainment Weekly, Oct. 29, 2004)

FAMILY TRADITION: COURTESY COUNTRY WEEKLY

Tanya Tucker -whose 40 Top 10 hits include "Delta Dawn" and "If It Don't Come Easy" - has three children who share the spotlight with their legendary mom on the reality show 'Tuckerville'.

Presley, 16

"I always knew from the time I was really young that my life was different from other kids, but I loved it.  The friends that I've become really close with don't treat me any different.  It's hard to be around people I don't know really well, and wonder if they like me for who I am.

There's a lot of pressure, but I think that's the only way to get me where I want to be: a great musical artist.  I want to be well-rounded, be able to pick up an instrument and play it, and belt out a song.  I think my mom is trying to get me there.  I look up to my mom.  I think that's where I want to be.

Grayson, 14

"Growing up, I knew that I was different, and my mom was different.  And I liked that.  I've had good friends, and it never really mattered what my mom did or what theirs did for a living.

"A lot of people judge famous people's sons, because they can't sing - or they can sing.  It doesn't really matter to me, because I'm gonna do my own thing and do it my own way.  People will like me for that, hopefully."

Layla, 6

"Mama sings good, and she's pretty.  When I grow up, I want to sing, too."

Article From Country Weekly April 9/07

There's a nice piece about Tanya & the balancing act many Moms in Country Music have in the April 9th edition of Country Weekly, here it is:

(Quote): "There was a time in my life that my career came first. But when I made the decision to bring children into my life, that all had to change. Occasionally I have to cancel my professional engagements in order to be there for my children.  Last week at CRS (Country Radio Seminar) Layla (age7) developed a 103 temperature and I had to put the business of being Tanya Tucker aside and be Layla's mom." (Unquote)

Tanya Helps Out A Friend!

Tanya Tucker helps out a friend

Tanya Tucker called on friends such as Pam Tillis, Billy Dean, Michael Peterson and David Frizzell to join her in Tuesday's benefit at French Quarter Cafe for Brandon Sean McGuiness.

Brandon, 25, is the son of Tanya's longtime friend T.C. "The Salsa Lady" Brandon, who lives here. Brandon, who has been battling Hodgkin's lymphoma since 2004, is in a California hospital preparing for a bone marrow transplant and has bills topping $1 million.

"I want to do anything I can to help him out. I've called on a few on my music friends, and it's an opportunity to give back; we have been blessed so much," Tanya says. "It makes me thank the Lord in heaven for blessing me with healthy children."

If you would like to help, send checks to me made out to Brandon Sean McGuiness. I'll make sure they get to the Bank of America account established for him.
