Country singer
Tanya Tucker was in Nevada when fire threatened her Malibu, Calif.,
home, but those who have seen her neighborhood have painted the scene
for her.
"Everything
around my house was burned. They say you look out of my house, and it
looks like a war zone or a nuclear bomb has been dropped," Tucker said
from Las Vegas on Tuesday.
"It looks like
Armageddon. It concerns me about what it says in the Bible about
earthquakes and fires in the last days. If you believe the Bible, those
things are starting to happen, and more frequently. Maybe we should get
ready to go."
Tucker, who was
at work in Las Vegas when fire threatened her home Sunday, credits
firefighters with saving it after wildfires erupted there.
"Literally, the
castle that was burning is maybe a mile at the most from where our house
is," Tucker said. "When I saw that, I was panicky. Then there were
houses that were burning above and below mine. And then my guesthouse
started burning, so that's when it really started getting heavy."
Tucker said
firefighters doused the house with water in an effort to keep it from
catching fire and then used the residence as a base while they were in
the area. She said she has special thanks for family friend Justin Bell,
a volunteer firefighter who was able to go into her home and remove some
of her prized possessions.
"He's a singer
and songwriter and a volunteer fireman, and he had the right credentials
to get up there," she said. "And he managed to pull a lot of things out
of the house that were important to me, like my stage clothes, my
jewelry and a painting."
Daughter
was at home
Tucker moved to
California in August to aid her daughters' acting careers. Her daughter
Presley, 18, was home at the time the fire threatened. Presley escaped
with the family's pets and has bounced around between hotels and friends
over the past few days, but Tucker said she hopes the family can return
home today. Tucker also is mother to Grayson, 16, and Layla, 8.
Among other
country stars with homes is Malibu is Dolly Parton.
Her home is not
believed to be in danger, said her spokeswoman Teresa Hughes. Parton's
home is on a bluff and there is no brush surrounding it, she said.
The man who
maintains the property "doesn't think hers is in danger." |
